This is something that always pulls at me and I worry that I’m too structured with my Trello boards and maybe not creative enough in the way that I write music. The author (Nicolas) says that people either think of you as either ADD or OCD but he’s right in that you need both. I find that my brain will want to create something at 1 o’clock in the afternoon that has no relation to the project I’m currently working on. Having the structure of projects helps me direct that creativity and energy to the task at hand.
There is a quote in this blog post that fits me perfectly and that’s “When I am in my flow, I feel like nothing in the world can stop me. But the moment I fall out of my flow, I crumble.” Having structure here forces me to work whether I’m in the flow or not and that quite often puts me right back in it. Nicolas says that structure shouldn’t be seen as something that suppresses creativity. It has this kind of negativity around it sometimes which it definitely does not deserve. A structure is there to give yourself the time to be creative.
“Structure is what creates the opportunity. Creativity is what makes the opportunity unfold.”
As always, it’s about trying to find the balance between two forces that appear to pull you in opposite directions. You need to find what works for you and go with it. Create something and show the world what you have to offer!
